Civil Contractors Federation Victoria has applauded the Commonwealth Government for prioritising civil trades and providing direct financial support for civil apprentices.

The Commonwealth’s announcement unlocks financial support for eligible apprentices through the Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment.

For civil contractors, this means the cost and risk of taking on an apprentice is materially reduced.

From 1 January 2026, eligible employers may receive up to $5,000 in the first year for priority civil apprenticeships, while apprentices may also receive up to $2,500, or up to $10,000 for key housing-related occupations.

This is a strong and welcome signal that civil construction skills are being properly recognised as essential to Victoria’s economic growth and infrastructure pipeline.

A result of sustained advocacy

This announcement reflects years of consistent advocacy by CCF to ensure civil construction is treated as a distinct workforce with specialised skills and training needs.

The Federation has been clear that national skills policy must better reflect how our industry operates on the ground.

It is encouraging to see that message landing and translating into tangible outcomes for apprentices and Victorian employers alike.
