The Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) today welcomes the news from Canberra that all branches of the Construction and General Divisions of the CFMEU will be placed under independent administration within the next week.

This afternoon, the Government and Opposition passed meaningful legislation that will enable us to start cleaning up the construction industry by placing the CFMEU under independent administration.

On the back of deep political engagement and media advocacy by the CCF, the legislation passed today is a welcome first step towards addressing the culture of union intimidation and coercion that has been prevalent on civil construction sites across the country.

As contractors who deliver the infrastructure that keeps our country moving, you deserve better.

You deserve a work environment free from intimidation and coercion, where you can focus on delivering high-quality projects without unnecessary interference. This legislation is a crucial first step towards creating that better environment.

This is just the first step on the path to a better civil industry.

Beyond this first step to place the CFMEU into administration, the CCF has developed and put forward a comprehensive suite of reforms aimed at improving the industry, including; the establishment of an Independent Regulator, strengthening and expanding the Fit and Proper Person Criteria, amending the Fair Work Act to prevent pattern bargaining, and reviewing and amending procurement practices.

Find more on this comprehensive plan here.

Over the coming weeks, we will be working closely with the CCF National Office, Fair Work Commission and our counterparts across the states and territories to advocate for the next crucial phase in achieving a better industrial relations framework.

Together, we will drive the necessary changes that our members deserve and continue to build a stronger foundation for Australia’s civil construction sector.
