Peak Construction Body Welcomes Report into Infrastructure Construction Market:

Australia’s peak representative body for the Civil Construction industry has welcomed the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack that he has commissioned a report into Federal Government procurement policy in the infrastructure construction sector.

Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) Chief Executive Officer Chris Melham said the Government’s $75 billion 10-year infrastructure investment program is playing an important role in driving economic growth, however, it can deliver stronger economic growth if the Federal Government’s procurement policy undergoes constructive reform.

The CCF also applauds Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Andrew Broad’s comments directed at providing greater support for local construction contractors to be engaged on infrastructure projects being funded by the Commonwealth. This mirrors the long-standing official policy of the Civil Contractors Federation.

Civil Contractors Federation is advocating for a more balanced approach to Federal Government procurement policy that recognises the value of more local content, including greater mid-tier civil contractor participation, believing this will result in additional benefits to communities including:

  • higher local employment opportunities,
  • increased and upskilled local workforce; and
  • higher economic growth in the local community.

The CCF looks forward to contributing to this Report in the lead up to the next meeting of the COAG Transport and Infrastructure Council later in 2018.
