Development for a faster and safer trip for cyclists between the city and inner west has recently commenced construction with a new 2.5 kilometer cycling super-highway.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson, has announced stage 1 with the first segment of the new veloway getting underway, the track will be completely seperated by traffic and built between Footscray Road and the new elevated road above.

Running between Shepherd Bridge in Footscray and the city side of Moonee Ponds Creek, the veloway will remove the need for cyclists to cross multiple intersections including busy port entries and exits – giving bike riders a safe dedicated express route to and from the CBD. 195 segments will be lifted individually to form the super-highway and will weigh a total of 1,700 tonnes upon completion.

This project is part part of more than 14 kilometers of new and upgraded pathways delivered by the West Gate Tunnel Project that will contain two lanes and will be four meters wide, allowing for a safe environment to Melbourne’s growing number of cyclists.

Various lane, walking and cycling path closures will occur along Footscray Road throughout development of the super-highway to complete the works as safely and quickly as possible to transform Melbourne’s west.
