Road authorities are responsible for improving the sustainability of road asset management. To assist Councils achieve their sustainability targets NATSPEC is participating in an initiative with Sustainability Victoria, the Office of Projects Victoria, the IPWEA (Victoria) and the Civil Contractors Federation to determine opportunities to reduce landfill.

To understand where the Councils are in their journey of using recycled materials, letters were sent out to all Australian Councils in March 2019 to gather information regarding their current policies, specifications and documentation for utilizing recycled material for new roads, road maintenance and replacement.
