Recent figures from WorkSafe Victoria highlight the need for stronger protections for apprentices across Victorian workplaces.

Over the past five years, 66 employers have been prosecuted for breaches of health and safety laws where apprentices were harmed or placed at serious risk. Thousands of injury claims have been accepted during this period, with falls from height and workplace bullying among the leading causes.

Apprentices are often at the very beginning of their careers. They are learning new skills, adapting to new environments and relying on experienced supervisors to guide them safely. The first six months in a role can be particularly high risk.

Civil construction employers have both legal and moral obligations to ensure apprentices are:

• properly inducted and trained
• effectively supervised, particularly during high-risk tasks
• protected from physical hazards such as falls
• supported within respectful, psychologically safe workplaces

CCF Victoria encourages all members to review their apprenticeship supervision, safety systems and workplace culture to ensure young workers are protected and supported.
