Civil skills training and procurement issues have dominated a dynamic discussion at the Victorian Civil Construction Industry Alliance’s latest Ministerial Roundtable in Melbourne.

Leaders of VCCIA member associations embraced the opportunity to actively engage with new Victorian Minister for Industry, Colin Brooks.

Other hot topics for members included: building resilient infrastructure; modern methods of construction (MMC) for housing and energy projects; land access and broader red tape challenges.

“Skills training and workforce development continue to present a barrier to accelerating progress on major public infrastructure policies and projects like the Big Housing Build,” said VCCIA current president, Lisa Kinross.

“In his short tenure as Industry Minister since late December’s Cabinet reshuffle, Minister Brooks has demonstrated genuine support for the state’s civil construction industry.

“We’ve also sought to show how much we as an industry group recognise and appreciate the collaborative leadership of government entities, such as Major Road Projects Victoria, which has been instrumental in leading a collaborative model of procurement and engagement with contractors.”

The 27 March Ministerial Roundtable heard from Alliance members including:

“As with any member-based organisation, it is only with a substantive, cohesive, united voice can we successfully advocate to Government on issues of importance and consequence to the community,” Kinross said.

“With the Government having recently released its new Plan for Victoria, mapping out the next 25 years’ worth of infrastructure investment and delivery, the Alliance and our association members are well-placed to increase advocacy as the united voice of civil infrastructure.”
