Civil construction employers and workers are encouraged to be proactive in understanding the rules and regulations governing the provision of engineering services in Victoria.
Civil Contractors Federation Victoria has made a submission to a State Government statutory review of the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019 (PERA).
The objective of the registration scheme is to promote set standards in the provision of professional engineering services. The PERA also exists to provide consumer protections by requiring professional engineers to meet qualification, experience, probity and continuing professional development requirements.
The Act stipulates that people providing professional engineering services in civil construction to register with the Business Licencing Authority, unless they work under the direct supervision of a registered professional engineer or are applying a prescriptive standard only.
However, CCF Victoria has flagged concerns about the lack of awareness of the Act and its obligations, which could have significant impacts for civil contractors in the event of actual breaches of the regulations, inadvertently or otherwise.
