Course Details
This confined space unit is designed to meet the requirements of OHS Regulations, relevant Compliance Codes of Practice, Australian Standards, and organisational safety obligations. Confined space work is classified as high-risk and strictly regulated under WHS legislation. This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to safely enter and work in confined spaces, including understanding permit systems, isolation procedures, use of PPE, emergency response protocols, and communication requirements.
This course is run by nationally accredited Registered Training Organisation Civil Train Victoria (RTO number 3704).
Topics Covered
Participants will develop the knowledge and skills to safely work in confined spaces, including:
- Relevant legislation: Victorian WorkSafe Regulations, current Compliance Codes, and AS 2865
- Hazard identification and atmospheric risks (types of gases)
- Safe entry and exit procedures: crew sizes, lifelines, harnesses, winches, communication methods
- Use of gas detection equipment: when, where, and how to test
- Self-rescue breathing apparatus
- Emergency and rescue procedures
- Practical confined space exercises
Who should attend?
For workers required to enter and perform tasks within confined spaces, such as pits, manholes, pipes, tanks, or chambers.
Relevant across water authorities, sewer systems, tunnelling, and maintenance operations, ensuring worker safety and legislative compliance.
What qualifications does this offer?
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for:
- RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces
Training records are securely maintained in the Civil Contractors Federation Victoria training database to enable refresher reminders and compliance monitoring if required.
Civil Contractors Federation, strongly recommends completing this course alongside our BA and rescue course:
- MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus
- PUASAR025 – Undertake confined space rescue
These additional units extend capability for emergency response and advanced confined space work in the industry.
